Political Art
If vice and comedy were ways of wrestling with my own life, political art was a way of wrestling with the world around me. The same instinct that drove me to paint cigarette butts and beer cans drove me to paint wars, elections, and protests. Art became the only way to hold both spheres together — the personal and the political — without collapsing under their weight.
My collage painting technique is uniquely well suited to this genre. By juxtaposition of images and ideas I am able to easily draw connections for viewers. And when I feel strong enough about an issue I often feel compelled to use my skills to speak out, not just in words but with image and paint on canvas. My collages are not neutral. They are arguments in color and texture. All of them, even the ones about religion, love, family, vice, comedy, and Perfect Day.
